SUNNYSIDE–TAHOE CITY, Placer County — Tahoe City Public Utility District is advancing reconstruction of a heavily used section of the West Shore multi-use trail linking Sunnyside with the 64 Acres area near Tahoe City.
TCPUD says the work covers approximately 1.4 miles of a path originally built in the 1970s. The reconstruction includes repaving much of the surface and widening portions to nine feet where conditions permit, with the aim of making travel safer for people walking, cycling and using other nonmotorized transportation. The district has described an investment of approximately $4 million, although individual budget documents and project phases use different years.
The project page contains both 2025 and 2026 references, so residents should verify the latest construction stage rather than assume the entire path is closed or reopened now. Temporary trail detours may change as crews proceed, while adjacent roads can remain open under separate restrictions.
What residents and visitors should know
Before planning a lakeside bike ride, review the district’s current trail notices. Do not cross construction barriers, even if the remaining unpaved area appears passable.
