SUNNYSIDE–TAHOE CITY, Placer County — Tahoe City Public Utility District reports that its new West Lake Tahoe Regional Water Treatment Plant began delivering treated water in 2025, creating a long-term drinking-water source for part of the West Shore.
The district invested more than $30 million in the plant and related infrastructure. The project included a new treatment facility, underwater intake work, lake pumps, piping to the treatment site and connections designed to serve the McKinney–Quail system, with potential capacity for additional communities over time. Better interconnection can also strengthen water availability for firefighting.
A new treatment plant does not mean every home near Sunnyside is supplied by this facility, nor does potential future capacity amount to an approved connection for all nearby areas. Utility ownership and service boundaries vary along the shore, and distribution upgrades may still be necessary.
What residents should know
Residents should verify their address’s water district and consult its most recent water quality report. People seeking information about future expansion should review TCPUD board records rather than assume a new rate or hookup date.
