SUNNYSIDE–TAHOE CITY, Placer County — Tahoe City Public Utility District is rebuilding approximately 1.4 miles of the Dianne Feinstein West Shore Tahoe Trail between the 64-Acres area and Sunnyside during 2026.

The district says the aging trail was originally constructed in the 1970s and has needed more than routine maintenance. Its rehabilitation plans include repaving most of the pavement, widening sections to approximately nine feet where feasible, improving signs and striping, modifying slopes, and replacing or adjusting railings and other safety features. The project is intended to serve both commuters and recreational walkers or cyclists.

The most recent posted work update, dated September 14, reported construction in the final stretch for the season, between the Highway 89 crossing and Sequoia Avenue. The posting does not itself guarantee that every portion has reopened as of November 1. During construction, temporary routes and closures may change.

What residents should know

People walking or cycling between Sunnyside and Tahoe City should consult the district’s project notices and follow work-zone signs rather than crossing active equipment areas. The improvements are part of the broader 23-mile TCPUD multi-use trail network.
